"Building Sustainability "
with Senator Tommy Banks

Our featured speaker is one of Edmonton's most esteemed and well known personalities – Senator Tommy Banks. Senator Banks will discuss two major issues of national/international importance, outline federal initiatives in addressing them and reflect on how we, as Facility Management professionals, can contribute.

Senator Banks was a vice-chair of the Liberal Caucus Task Force on Urban Issues appointed by Prime Minister Chretien last year. The task force looked at how to strengthen the quality of life in our large urban centres by addressing competitiveness, environmental issues, cultural assets, transit, settlement and integration services for newcomers, urban Aboriginal people and crime-related issues.

As Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources he is well aware of climate change – one of the most significant environmental challenges the world has ever faced. The potential impacts on our health, economy and environment require action. With the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, the Government of Canada has made climate change a national priority, and is working closely with Canadians and the global community to meet this challenge.

Prior to being called to Parliament as a Senator, Tommy Banks enjoyed a successful 50 year international career as a working musician. He performed in North America, Europe, and Asia as pianist, arranger, conductor, and producer, mainly in the fields of pop and jazz. He provided musical direction for the ceremonies of the 1987 Commonwealth Games, the World University Games, EXPO '86, and the XV Olympic Winter Games and for hundreds of radio and television programmes.

A Calgary-born lifelong Albertan, he moved to Edmonton in 1949 where he resides with Ida, as do their grown children and their families.

Come and learn how you can make a difference!
