July 01, 2006 IFMA-Northern Alberta Chapter Newsletter - Put Another Shrimp on the Barbie
The Presidents Message
Dear Fellow IFMA NAC Members,
I would like to begin by first thanking all of you for your unwavering support of IFMA, our Board and this Presidency. It was clear to me from my very first meeting that this was a group of professionals that respected and supported one another and was something that I wanted to be a part of. I am very proud to have been elected President of our Chapter and I look forward to what I believe will be a very motivating and exciting year. Yes I said it, “M&E”. Yes I know I hate acronyms too! But this one’s different.
I have served on more than a dozen volunteer Boards and Committees over the past 15 years ranging from Foundation work to Chairing Grievance and Professional Development Committees.
I learned quickly that you need a lot of “M&E” to ensure success in any endeavor, and everyone likes to be successful.
I’m not talking about dance on the table kind of motivation and excitement (what happens in IFMA stays in IFMA) but heightened enthusiasm is essential. If we can continue to support and build and bolster each other the result will be an organization that benefits the FM community and you personally and professionally. This profession and our chapter specifically is certainly something of which we can all be proud.
I have the good fortune to have been passed a legacy that will continue to into my term as President…
A partnership with the Food Bank will provide opportunities for your professional involvement.
A Strategic Plan with clear focus and directives will provide opportunities for your participation and scrutiny.
A targeted Membership Drive will provide opportunities for networking and increased industry recognition.
Interesting and useful Programs and Education will provide opportunities for development, debate and discussion.
Sponsorship opportunities will enhance credibility and exposure to decision makers.
And finally clear Communications will ensure a continued knowledge of what’s going on and when.
I would like to thank the outgoing IFMA Board Members for their diligent work, many of whom have served many terms and can be credited with “making a real difference”.
I would like to welcome the returning and new IFMA Board Members, your time and commitment is needed and greatly appreciated.
Brian Stephenson, President
The New Board for the IFMA NAC
The new governing board for the chapter’s upcoming 2006-2007 fiscal year was recently announced at the annual general meeting that occurred June 15, 2006 at Von’s. For the upcoming year would you please welcome as:
President – Brian Stephenson
Vice President – Cody Loy, CFM
Treasurer – Ed Paras, CFM
Secretary – Milli Murray
Director – Veronica Wake
Director – Paul Simons
Director – Walter Neilson
Director – Ken E. Stepan, CFM
Past President – John McLaughlin, CFM
This is your executive and supporting team for 2006 – 2007. Additionally the IFMA NAC also retains the services of Vicki Hackl as our chapter administrator. The Board meets on the second Thursday of the month to discuss the issues of the day and plot the takeover of the facility management world (or at least the part that we think we control) for the benefit of all IFMA NAC members. The New Board members and the Previous Board members are expecting to get together in early July to share knowledge and undertake the necessary transition activities.
The Money
As at May 31, 2006 the NAC had a balance of approximately $26,000.00 in the bank (as reported at the AGM by Ed Paras our Treasurer).
The AGM
As annual general meetings go this was a great one. The company was excellent, the food and drink by Von’s was marvelous, and we threw the agenda out the window and never looked back. The board members delivered their reports in a most timely and concise fashion, there were awards of recognition presented (see below), and we acknowledged our upcoming community contribution by announcing our intent to provide the Edmonton Food Bank with our knowledge, expertise and wisdom related to facilities management over the next five years. We also thanked our sponsors for their fine contributions and handed out a good number of prizes to those in attendance.
The Awards presented at the AGM
The NAC was proud to present to Tim McCoy, CFM a plaque acknowledging his efforts, leadership and expertise related to the development of the PM1000 course. The work is not over yet as the course developers are now looking at a review update of course contents. Thank you Tim for your continued contribution to the FM profession.
Additionally the NAC also recognized the fine literary accomplishments (the NAC Board Minutes) of our board Secretary John Anderson who has served with us for the past couple of years and is stepping down from the board at the end of June.
The Programs
July – Summer (go do something hands on – building sand castles works).
August – Summer (by this time you should be a professional sand castle builder).
September – Event scheduled for September (but we can not tell you what it is yet – check the web page for the latest that the IFMA NAC is involved in or planning for our members).
The Special Opportunity with the Edmonton Food Bank
As you are now all aware the NAC is and has undertaken the role of advisor to the Edmonton Food Bank in matters related to facilities management for the next five years. The is our laboratory of success where we as a community of practice can give back our expertise and help make another organization a beneficiary of our knowledge, wisdom and skills. The opportunity is being spearheaded by John McLaughlin and will involve a number of other contributing individuals from the NAC as opportunities and needs arise. Participate and know that you are doing great work.
Membership
As at June 30, 2006 our membership stands at 58 members.
