President's Message
Dear Chapter and Board Members,
I hope the New Year finds you and your family happy and healthy.
Over the past year, our chapter has maintained a steady pace and risen to meet the challenges of maintaining a healthy
membership and a healthy bottom line. Kudos and many thanks!!
In the busiest City and Province, where your time is the most valuable commodity and always in demand both
personally and professionally we continue to struggle with membership and participation in the form of feedback,
suggestions and attendance at meetings and events. You have told us that the programs and opportunities are great
so please show us and come out and enjoy a few hours together or send me an email indicating some other creative way
to engage and provide value to you and the Association. Your interests and thoughts are exactly what I want to hear.
We still have two vacancies on the Board for the positions of Membership Chair and Program Chair.
Please contact either myself (231-0895) or Vicki (435-8716) if you would like to get involved in a leadership capacity
or even to participate at a single task level. We appreciate all assistance.
We have several ongoing initiatives where your expertise will be greatly appreciated such as our partnership with the
Food Bank, Strategic Planning, Membership, Sponsorship, Programs and Education.
If you recall we are having a 7:00 AM pancake breakfast meeting in the last week of January
on the topic of Ergonomics. It will be hosted at the Herman Miller Office located at 17712-107 Avenue in Edmonton.
Please keep an eye on your inbox next week for this and other upcoming events and program invitations.
Our success depends on those who serve and through the participation of every single member.
I look forward to 2007 and the opportunities it will bring IFMA to provide you with access to people,
information, tools and projects to enhance your Facility Management disciplines and have some fun doing it.

Profile - Mr. Cody Loy
The amazing, the wonderful, the MBA'd and Second Class Power Engineer, Past President and current
Vice President of IFMA NAC - it's Cody Loy. He is the gentleman leading our charge in assisting the
Edmonton Food Bank (our Community Affiliation Project) with their energy opportunities. Presently
managing the Edmonton office of Energy Solutions for Stantec Consulting Ltd. Cody has long since
recognized the importance of continuous learning and the need to evolve while addressing the
increasingly difficult pace of work in our red-hot economy. With a healthy interest in Science
Fiction (film and book), a latent desire to become a Master Carpenter and a fine hand at sketching
out plans for new home projects Cody would be well set to retire (if only he could win that lottery
and get that additional million dollars). A strong believer in teams as both a resource and a strength
Cody's personal motto of "Surround yourself with good people" is very apt. When he is not working he
enjoys playing with his grandson and tinkering in his shop as well as swinging the clubs on the local
links. Cody does recommend that you check out the Lee Valley Tool website for their fine collection of
toys (in this case tools and other neat stuff) that are appropriate for every carpenter and home renovationist.
There you have it - Mr. Cody Loy - gentleman, scholar, energy solution and carpenter.

Fit-up Standards for the General Purpose Office (Federal Offices)
Within the context of the Canadian federal work environment the following technical reference manual
is the current standard by which general-purpose office space is to be fit-up. This manual is recognized as
a continuous work in progress as is it evolves to address all the elements of the office environment. I invite you
to activate the following link and see how the standards employed compare to those in your
organization - http://www.pwgsc.gc.ca/realproperty/text/pubs_fitup/toc-e.html

The Members
As at December 2006 the NAC is holding at 60 direct members plus a couple of rarely seen virtual members.

The Events
November - The IFMA NAC was delighted to host a forum on Human Resources. Thank you to all the people that attended.
December - The IFMA NAC was to take in the neon lights and go bowling for a seasonal social celebration.
The uptake on that event was considerably less than anticipated and the IFMA NAC could not meet some of
minimums required to secure the reservation so we had to cancel. No worries though we shall all get bowling
at some future date. Bowl on.

The Editor's Word:
007 - Just think what would James Bond do in a situation like this? Well that is easy, simply - save the day,
save the Queen, save the girl, disappear for a romantic get away, go bowling and then return the jewels - all in
a days work. It is almost as easy as being a Facility Manager starring in our classic movies. You know the ones
- "From the Boiler Room with Love", "Facilities are Forever", or my favorite "Facility Royale". Welcome to 2007;
enjoy the upcoming year and the best that it brings. Shaken not stirred
